Highlights include the Market Square and the Wawel Cathedral and Castle. Near Krakow is the somber Auschwitz Concentration Camp where more than one million people perished. Today this museum serves as a reminder of what should never happen again. The Baltic town of Gdansk is historic and is known as the birthplace of Poland's modern independence movement. The alpine-like resort of Zakopane is worth a visit for its beautiful wooden architecture and spectacular mountain scenery.
