The city of Mostar is situated in a beautiful valley bedded between the high mountains of Herzegovina. It is thanks to the River Neretva that Mostar was able to develop very early as a trading center in the desert-like landscape of this Southern region. What makes this city famous is its stone bridge, built under the Ottoman empire in 1565. It was the great architect Mimar Hajrudin who succeeded in the impossible mission to cross the Neretva River with a single span stone bridge. Destroyed during the last Balkan conflicts and totally reconstructed along with its closest vicinity, the bridge was finally inscribed in 2005 onto the Unesco World Heritage List.
