Akureyri is perfectly located for those who want to spend a few days in a charming town, but still be able to experience a true Icelandic winter adventure. Based only a few hours drive from North Iceland’s highlights and attractions, it won’t be long until you find yourself standing in front of the striking Godafoss waterfall or bathing in a natural hot spring at the Myvatn Nature Baths. You’ll drive around the legendary Lake Myvatn with views of pseudo-craters and the lava pillars at Dimmuborgir. Experience the boiling mud pools, steaming fumaroles and sulphur pits at the geothermal area of Hverir and travel in comfort to craters and volcanoes. Choose from a number of additional optional tours, search for the Northern Lights, visit local farmers or sample fresh Icelandic cuisine.

Itinerary

Day 1 Reykjavik
Upon arrival to Reykjavik self transfer (we recommend Flybus) to your centrally located hotel. We suggest a stroll down the city’s main shopping street Laugavegur or visit the Einar Jonsson Sculpture Museum. Overnight in Reykjavik.

Day 2 Reykjavik-Akureyri
In the morning self transfer to the airport for your flight to Akureyri, the capital of the North. From there, a self-transfer to your hotel. The town which is located just a few miles from the Arctic Circle is colorful walking city with a wide range of shops, restaurants, galleries and museums. You will stay for two nights in Akureyri.

Day 3 Akureyri-Lake Myvatn Excursion
Start today with a fully guided tour, to visit all the highlights that Lake Myvatn has to offer. First visit Godafoss waterfall on the way to Lake Myvatn. Continue to the pseudo-craters of Skutustadagigar and from there to the mystic Dimmuborgir (Dark Castles) abounding with pillars of lava and strange formations. A stop at the warm underground river in Grjotagja rift and a visit to the geothermal area of Hverir with boiling mud pools, steaming fumaroles and sulphur pits. Krafla volcano area is your next destination where you’ll drive past the power station bearing the same name that relies on geothermal steam energy for its operation. Then you’ll explore the explosion crater Viti that was formed in 1724 in the Myvatnseldar eruption and enjoy the view over Leirhnjukur volcano. End the tour at the lovely, Myvatn Nature Baths, a relaxing visit to the completely natural swimming pool of geothermal water situated in the middle of lava fields with a great view over Lake Myvatn. Return to Akureyri in the afternoon.

Day 4 Akureyri-Reykjavik
At leisure until you self transfer to the airport for your return flight to Reykjavik. If your flight leaves in the afternoon/evening you might want to book some optional tours or activities. Upon arrival self transfer to your hotel. Remainder of the day is at leisure. Overnight in Reykjavik.

Day 5 Reykjavik-End of Tour
After breakfast self transfer to the airport (we recommend using the Flybus). You can extend your stay in Reykjavik or continue to Greenland, Faeroe Islands or Scandinavia.
